Fire of life / Fire of water ~Fire and Water Supporting Journeys and Daily Lives~

Despite the fact that we can now easily obtain fire and water with the flick of a switch, they were and continue to be important lifelines. During the Edo period, there were no gas pipes, electricity, or water taps accessible to households; therefore, access to fire and water were the most essential conditions of survival. This exhibition will primarily introduce Kaido-e (pictures depicting post-station towns), and Ukiyoe-Hanga with elements of “fire” and “water”. “Fire” serves light and warmth, while “water” refreshes our throats. We hope you discover the “fire of life / water of life” that were important aspects of the lives of the Edo people.
