Kyoto in June Arashiyama Young Sweetfish “Ayu” Festival

The Arashiyama Wakaayu Festival, the 37th annual event to herald the arrival of summer in Arashiyama, will be held for the first time in four years to mark the opening of the sweetfish season on the Katsura River. 400 young ayu fish will be caught each day for a charity event, and those who donate 1,000 yen or more per unit will be able to taste the chargrilled young ayu fish. The two-day event will be held at Nakanoshima Park next to Watarigetsu Bridge in Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most popular tourist spots. The event will also feature a sweetfish catching experience, a “Katsura River Aquarium” where visitors can touch the creatures living in the Katsura River, and a children’s fair “Goldfish Sukui” for children and adults alike.

Catching ayu fish is a difficult task because of its speed! It will surely be a valuable experience!
Other events will also be held at the same time, including the “Katsura River Aquarium,” an experience to touch the creatures living in the Katsura River with the cooperation of the Association for Utilizing the Blessings of Kyoto’s Rivers, and an exhibition booth by a high school student (Hayaya Furuta) who has been researching fish species in the Katsura River since 2016!

Proceeds and donations will be used to preserve the environment for living creatures, including the Katsura River and the surrounding mountains. We ask for your cooperation in carrying on the traditions and preserving the environment of Arashiyama, Kyoto.
