Ako gishi sai (Winter)SENGAKUJI 2025

A Biannual Memorial Event Honoring the 47 Ronin at Historic Sengakuji Temple
At Sengakuji Temple in Takanawa, Tokyo, the Ako Gishi Festival is held twice a year—in December and April—to commemorate the 47 Ronin who avenged their lord in the Ako Incident.

For the winter edition (“Winter Gishi Festival”), the schedule typically spans multiple days. For example, in 2025 it runs from Friday, December 12 through Sunday, December 14.

During this period visitors offer incense at the graves of the Ronin and participate in various memorial activities to honor their loyalty and the samurai spirit.

The event also features museum viewing hours (December 12-13: 9:00–18:00; December 14: 9:00–20:00) and special ceremonies: on December 12-13 memorial services at 11:00 and 14:00, and on December 14 the Ronin procession arrives around 15:30.

In the clear winter air, this solemn and culturally rich festival offers a memorable way to reflect on one of Japan’s most iconic historical stories.
