Koiji Island is a legendary island on the Shiranui Sea. The Renryu Festival was named after the Chinese character ”Koi” from the island’s name, which can also be read as ”Ren” and ”Ryu” from ”Ryujin” the mountain god. The festival began as a summer festival expressing gratitude to the sea and mountains when Minamata Bay was designated as an important harbor in 1955. Festival goers show their appreciation of water and pray for the prosperity of fishery, agriculture, commerce and industry. There is a parade and dancing which is open to anyone who wishes to participate.
