Yokohama Chinatown 2017 Lunar New Year

While it’s fun to visit whatever the season, Yokohama’s Chinatown district is never livelier than during its New Year festival. The two weeks of festivities are stacked with events, including a countdown party on the night of January 27, traditional lion dance performances and music both in Yamashitacho Park (February 4) and the main thoroughfares (January 28), a parade of traditional costumes on the afternoons of January 29 and February 5, and a spectacular Lantern Festival on February 11 from 5.30pm (around Masobyo Temple).

◆China Lion Dance
Lion will pray for the prosperity and good harvest and dance around and bite on envelopes containing congratulatory gifts of money hanged in front the stores.

◆Spring Festival Traditional Performance
Lion dance, dragon dance, dance performance, songs, harp performance, acrobatics, and other traditional Chinese cultures will be performed to capture the eyes of the visitors with their flamboyant performances.

◆Celebration Parade
Extravagant parade to celebrate the New Year’s with costumes of the Emperor, ethnic clothing, lion dance, and dragon dance.

◆Lantern Festival
A solemn event in which lanterns with messages of wishes and dreams are dedicated and send peace to the heavens on the last day of the Chinese New Year.
