The “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” series that depict the scenery of the Tokaido from Nihonbashi to Kyoto is a collection that is synonymous with the iconic Utagawa Hiroshige. Among his works, the first Tokaido piece that was published in 1833, “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” (Hoeido Edition), was credited for his unique art style and was the piece that spread the Hiroshige name. Eventually, the iconic piece led Hiroshige to acquire the position of popular Ukiyo-e Eshi representing the landscape Hanga genre. This exhibition will introduce the three Tokaido series in separate sessions from Nihonbashi to Kyoto featuring the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” (Hoeido Edition). We hope you enjoy the collection that the Shizuoka City Tokaido Hiroshige Museum of Art takes pride in.
