This exhibition looks at the works of the Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) and of Japanese artist Yumeji Takehisa (1884–1934), whose works exemplify Taisho Romanticism. These two near-contemporaries each gave rise to new schools of art in their respective lands, yet the artworks of both are characterized by the pursuit of beauty. By comparing the two artists’ aesthetic styles, we may be able to get closer to the way in which each expressed that beauty. Through one of Japan’s leading collections, discover the works of Mucha and Yumeji alongside one another.
