Particularly skilled at views of famous sites, Utagawa Hiroshige is counted among the greatest eshi, or painters, of ukiyo-e. Did you know that, following his death, his disciples followed in his footsteps as Hiroshige II and Hiroshige III, going right down to Hiroshige V? This exhibit features works by the first three Hiroshiges, who among the various “Hiroshiges” left numerous works as ukiyo-eshi. Enjoy some of the works of the “Three Hiroshiges” that depict the changes in Japan from the late Edo period to the confusion of the shogunate’s collapse, and on to the middle of the Meiji period.
The Exhibition Room features an exhibit of past winners of the Yui New Year’s Card Printmaking Contest, which began in 2005 and so is now celebrating its 20th anniversary.
