Experience Japan’s most spectacular winter illumination at the Nagasaki Lantern Festival 2026. Originally started as a Chinese New Year celebration by the residents of Nagasaki’s Chinatown, this festival has evolved into a massive city-wide event, attracting over 1 million visitors annually.
From February 6 to February 23, 2026, more than 15,000 lanterns and massive zodiac sculptures will transform the historic streets of Nagasaki into a breathtaking world of light.
1. Highlights You Can’t Miss
15,000 Lanterns & Giant Art Pieces: Explore the city filled with vibrant lanterns. Each area has a unique theme, such as the pink lanterns at Doza River (perfect for couples) and yellow lanterns at Meganebashi (Spectacles Bridge), which create a stunning reflection in the water.
The Emperor Parade (Feb 14 & 21): A majestic procession featuring over 150 people in traditional Qing Dynasty costumes. In 2026, the Emperor will be played by popular Nagasaki-born actor Mizuki Maehara (Feb 21).
Dragon Dance (Jaodori): A dynamic and powerful traditional performance where dancers manipulate a 20-meter dragon as if it were alive. This is a must-see for anyone interested in Japanese-Chinese cultural fusion.
One-Night Only: Sky Lantern Release (Feb 7): A rare event where hundreds of lanterns are released into the night sky at the Former Prefectural Office site (Reservation required).
2. Tips for International Travelers
Best Photo Spot: Meganebashi (Spectacles Bridge) at night is iconic. The lanterns reflecting on the river create a perfect “Instagrammable” shot.
Stay Warm: February in Nagasaki can be quite chilly, especially near the water. Wear layers and bring “Kairo” (disposable heat packs) available at any convenience store.
Avoid the Weekend Crowds: Weekends during the parade are extremely crowded. For a more relaxed experience, we recommend visiting on a weekday evening.
Local Delicacies: Don’t forget to try Nagasaki Champon (noodles) and Yori-yori (crispy Chinese twisted pastry) from the food stalls in Chinatown.
