Held in early February at Shinzan Shrine in Oga City, Akita Prefecture, the Namahage Sedo Festival combines the folkloric Namahage tradition with the sacred Sedo fire ceremony, creating one of Tohoku’s most iconic winter events.
In the flickering torchlight, fearsome Namahage—dressed as mountain deities wearing demon-like masks—descend from the snowy mountains and walk through the shrine grounds. The dramatic reenactment of their descent, along with purification rituals performed close to the audience, offers a rare opportunity to experience a living piece of Japan’s spiritual heritage.
The powerful rhythm of drums, the glow of flames against the snow, and the mystical atmosphere make this festival an unforgettable cultural experience that draws visitors from across Japan and abroad.
