Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido with Yaji Kita

Jippensha Ikku’s comic book, “Tōkai dōchū Hizakurige (Shanks’ Pony along the Tōkaidō)” featuring the adventures of Yajirobei and Kitahachi was a best-seller that spanned for a total of 21 years including the original publication in 1802 and the sequel. The Hizakurige drove the travel boom during the Edo era and the increasing interest for travel led to Hiroshige’s Ukiyo-e Hanga, “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō”.
This exhibition will explore the adventures of the Hizakurige with two of Hiroshige’s Tōkaidō Ukiyo-e Hanga series, “Fifty-Three stations of the Tōkaidō” (Hoeidō Edition) and “Tōkaidō Road” (Reisho Tōkaidō). Enjoy a trip on the Tōkaidō in the Edo era with Kita and Yaji.
