Meisho-e, pictures of famous places, became a popular ukiyo-e genre amidst the boom in travel during the Edo period. For people back then, who might only get one chance in their lives to travel, meisho-e, which depicted famous landscapes around Japan, were a popular and accessible pleasure that allowed them to reminisce about their journey around the country. The Exhibition hall showcases some of the finest works from a range of series created by Hiroshige and other ukiyo-eshi (painters) in the last years of the shogunate, while the Exhibition room displays woodblock-printed books about travel and travel items.
