Hirosaki Castle, a famous scenic spot for cherry blossoms, is a spectacular sight in winter. Founded in 1977, the Hirosaki Yuki-doro Festival is one of the 5 great snow festivals in the Michinoku area. Residents make the lanterns for the Yuki-doro Festival during the long, cold winters of the northland to make it even more enjoyable. At nights during the severe winter, the snow covered castle towers and old pine trees are lit up to produce a fantastic and poetic sense of nostalgia. Around the lotus pond that extends from the castle keep to Iwaki Mountain, miniature snow houses with candles inside are placed in a line to create a mystic atmosphere of snow and light. At the main venue around the fourth tower, many fun snow events take place, such as displays of snow statues in the shape of historical buildings, and a huge slide.
