The Monbetsu Drift Ice Festival began in 1963.
Monbetsu is now firmly established as a “drift ice town. In the past, local residents did not welcome the arrival of drift ice because the sea was closed.
The “Drift Ice Festival” was conceived in order to revitalize the community by bringing such a nuisance to the area. (Usually held in early February)
