Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival 2026

Discover one of Tokyo’s most fascinating local traditions at the Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival, scheduled for late January to early February 2026.
While Shimokitazawa is globally famous for its thrifting scene and indie vibes, this festival offers a rare glimpse into a tradition that has thrived in the heart of this “cool” neighborhood for over 90 years.

1. What makes Shimokitazawa special?
Shimokitazawa, often called “Shimokita” by locals, is a maze of narrow streets filled with vintage clothing stores, record shops, and small theaters. Unlike the shiny skyscrapers of Shibuya or Shinjuku, Shimokita maintains a cozy, bohemian atmosphere. During the Tengu Festival, this modern subculture clashes beautifully with ancient Japanese folklore.

2. The Legend of the Tengu in Shimokita
The festival is rooted in the legend of the Tengu (a red-faced supernatural being with a long nose) at Shinryuji Temple. The Tengu is revered as a guardian deity that brings good fortune and wards off evil.
The Giant Mask Parade (Tengu Dochu): A massive red Tengu mask, nearly 3 meters tall, is paraded through the narrow shopping streets. Watching this giant mask navigate the tight corners of Shimokitazawa’s alleys is a thrilling sight.
A Unique Chant: “Fuku wa Uchi!” (Luck in!) In standard Japanese Setsubun festivals, people chant “Demons out, Luck in!” However, in Shimokitazawa, people only chant “Fuku wa Uchi!” (Luck in!) three times. This is because it is believed that the powerful Tengu has already cleared the neighborhood of any evil spirits.

3. Schedule:
Jan 30 (Fri) 8:00 PM: Night procession at local bars.
Jan 31 (Sat) 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM: The Main Parade (Tengu Dochu).
Feb 1 (Sun) 1:00 PM: Traditional games and lucky draws (Limited to first 300 guests).

4. Tips for International Visitors
Crowd Safety: The streets in Shimokita are very narrow. It is advisable to find a spot early if you want to see the giant mask up close.
Photography: The juxtaposition of the traditional Tengu parade against the backdrop of graffiti and vintage shops is highly “Instagrammable,” but please be mindful of local shopkeepers and other pedestrians.
Weather: Early February is quite cold in Tokyo. We recommend enjoying the festival and then ducking into one of Shimokita’s famous curry shops or craft beer bars to warm up.
