Takisanji Onimatsuri 2026

The Takisanji Onimatsuri (Ogre Festival) is one of Japan’s most significant fire festivals, boasting a history of over 800 years. Held in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, this spiritual event is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
The festival reaches its peak when men carrying massive flaming torches run through the temple, accompanied by three “Oni” (ogres) wearing masks designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

1. Festival Highlights & Schedule
While rituals take place throughout the day, the most anticipated events occur in the afternoon and evening.
3:00 PM onwards: Rituals & Mame-maki Following traditional ceremonies, a “bean-throwing” ritual (Mame-maki) is held to drive away bad luck.
7:00 PM onwards: The Fire Festival (Climax) In the darkness, over 30 massive torches—some reaching 5 meters in length—are carried into the main temple hall.
The Dance of Fire and Ogres: The appearance of the Grandfather, Grandmother, and Child ogres amidst the roaring flames creates a mystical and powerful atmosphere.

2. Planning Your Visit: Transportation & Parking
Large crowds are expected, and local traffic conditions may change. It is advisable to check for the latest updates on the official tourism website.
By Public Transport: From JR Okazaki Station or Meitetsu Higashi-Okazaki Station, take a Meitetsu Bus bound for “Daimon-eki” or “Taki-danchi” and get off at the “Taki” bus stop. Note: While extra buses are often scheduled, please allow ample time for travel as buses may be crowded.
By Car: Temporary parking is typically available near the temple. However, based on previous years, these areas often fill up by the late afternoon. Many visitors choose to park near Okazaki Station and take the bus to avoid traffic congestion near the temple.

3. Important Considerations for Visitors
To ensure a safe experience, please keep the following points in mind:
Attire: Due to the nature of the fire festival, sparks may fly depending on wind conditions. It is generally recommended to wear clothing made of natural fibers like cotton and to avoid flammable synthetic materials (such as nylon).
Photography: The use of tripods or stepladders may be restricted in crowded areas near the temple hall. Please follow the instructions of the local staff and signs.
Winter Weather: Temperatures in February drop significantly after sunset. Wearing layers and bringing heat packs (Kairo) is a common way to stay comfortable during the long outdoor wait.
