The Sounkyo Onsen Ice Waterfall Festival is a winter event held annually in Sounkyo, a hot spring town surrounded by the rugged Daisetsuzan mountain range. Taking advantage of the region’s severe subzero temperatures, the venue is filled with ice domes, tunnels, and large ice structures modeled after waterfalls. During the day, visitors can enjoy the natural blue and white hues of the ice, while at night the sculptures are illuminated in vibrant colors, creating a magical atmosphere.
Throughout the festival area, various ice art installations and elevated viewpoints are set up, allowing guests to appreciate the unique beauty of light passing through thick layers of ice. On select days, fireworks light up the night sky, and food stalls offer warm drinks and local specialties that enhance the winter experience.
Blending the harsh beauty of nature with detailed human craftsmanship, the event is regarded as one of Hokkaido’s signature winter festivals and attracts visitors from across Japan and abroad.
